Practice Nursing

Program Overview and Rationale

The Division's Practice Nurse Program is part of the Practice Support Program and aims to provide support and information to  all nurses working in general practice, through the provision of information, advice, education and networking opportunities. We also provide assistance and advice for GPs and Practice Managers looking to employ nurses to enhance the overall efficiency and quality of services delivered.

Duration of Program and how it Operates

Practice support officers provide advice, support and assistance to GPs and Practice Managers with regards to recruitment, employment,  government assistance initiatives and  education of practice nurses, with emphasis on how nurses can improve overall practice-based efficiencies and patient outcomes.

Once employed, nurses are offered advice and information on networking, education and professional events. In addition to relaying up-to-date information on available courses and workshops from a variety of external providers, the Division also conducts regular educational events, specifically geared towards the practice nurse environment.

How the Program benefits GPs and their Patients

The employment of practice nurses has been widely demonstrated to increase practice-based efficiencies and improve patient access to services. In providing a resource base for all the aforementioned activities, GPs are assisted in an ongoing capacity, for the duration of practice nurse employment.

The provision of ongoing support and education for nurses, often at heavily subsidised rates, ensures that nurses are sufficiently skilled to provide quality centred attention to the patients in their care.

Current level of Program Participation / Utilisation

The Program is available to all GPs and their staff.

All practice nurses currently employed in the Division catchment area are listed on the Division's Practice Support Database. All nurses receive regular updates and offers of education and networking through mailouts, faxouts and regular newsletters.
