Program Overview and Rationale

The Bridges GP After Hours Service was established in 2002 after extensive consultation with local GPs, Central Coast Area Health and the local community to provide an After Hours service for patients of General Practitioners in the Gosford / Erina region. It is located in the Erina Community Health Centre at 169 The Entrance Road, Erina. Ph: 4367 9699.

Hours of Business:

Monday to Friday: 7pm-10.30pm
Saturday: 3pm-10.30pm
Sunday: 10am-7 pm
Public Holidays: 10am-7 pm

Duration of Program and how it Operates

The service has been operating from its current location for approx five years and during business hours is staffed with one GP and a receptionist. The service works closely with Gosford Hospital Emergency Department regarding patient waiting times for non-urgent medical matters and transportation and treatment of seriously ill patients who require hospitalisation.

The After Hours Service is designed primarily to provide GP access to patients of participating GPs, however all members of the community are consulted at the service. All GPs on the Central Coast are eligible to participate in the service.

How the Program benefits GPs and their Patients

The service provides a safe and comfortable work environment for GPs and staff with management and administration support offered through reception staff, the Practice Manager, Board of The After Hours Service and The Central Coast Division of General Practice. The service assists GPs and their practice with accreditation requirements regarding after hours care and enables PIP to be accessed.

Patient care is paramount to the service with all participating GPs meeting calculated criteria prior to performing shifts at the site. GP clinical services are supervised regularly by the Board of the Bridges After Hours Service. The service provides access to home care services after hours for patients of participating GPs with a telephone triage service, operated by clinical nurses conducted from 10.30pm to 8am, seven days a week. All patients consultations are faxed to the patients regular GP within 24 hours of attendance to provide continuative medical care.
